Specialist physician in Internal Medicine and PhD in Medicine from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, attached to the Hospital Universitario de Navarra since May 2019. The subject of his doctoral thesis was hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis, on which the PI has collaborated in several Cochrane Foundation meta-analyses, the latest published in 2025.
Currently, his clinical and research line of specialty is systemic autoimmune diseases. He has prior research experience in the line of autoimmune manifestations in cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors, especially in predictive biomarkers including generic autoantibodies. He has received funding for competitive regional projects, such as the AUTENTIC project (2020 call for Health Research and Development Project Grants from the Basque Government, file no. 2020111056) and INTER-AUTENTIC (2023 call for Health Research Projects from the Government of Navarra, reference no. 45_NA23).
Another of the PI's research lines is systemic autoimmune diseases and their immunomodulatory treatment. During the COVID pandemic, he was the sponsor and first author of the independent clinical trial CORTIVID, which evaluated the efficacy and safety of corticosteroids in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 without respiratory failure. CORTIVID has been included in two meta-analyses published in the journals Cochrane Database Syst Rev and NEJM Evidence, where its high methodological quality was highlighted. Other articles published by the PI in the research line on systemic autoimmune diseases have focused on antiphospholipid syndrome and giant cell arteritis.
Regarding clinical experience, the PI is co-responsible for a weekly monographic consultation on systemic autoimmune diseases and has completed a Master's Degree in Clinical Management of Systemic Autoimmune Diseases from the University of Barcelona, where he received the Master's Final Project Award.
